I have had no success with sourdough starters, would you share your secrets. Or even consider running a programme. I am the Chair of the Wairarapa Community Centre and a board member of the Womens Centre and there is strong following amongst my colleagues.

I showed this to my husband who made it for my Xmas present. We have been looking for a watering trough for the chickens for some time as the waterer we used needed to be filled every couple of days and was growing algae. - the girls seem very happy with it, with this and the grandpas feeder we can now leave them for a few days at a time if we need to with only egg collection to keep the neighbours busy.

Hi John

It's a satisfying time of year for beekeepers, isn't it? Good to hear that you have fine weather and a good clover flow.

You were kind enough to list 'Practical beekeeping in New Zealand' in your bookshelf, with a complimentary recommendation. The book has been completely revised and the fourth edition is now out:

Cheers,

Thanks for the idea of shade cloth! I have lots of that hanging around, and I do not like the idea of buying landscapers cloth when I can reuse something.

I'd be curious to see what effect contaminants in the water would have on the measured resistance. Wondering if it's possible for low levels of impurities (still safe for drinking) to upset the resistance reading to the point where the level reported is significantly out.

As mentioned previously - capacitive sensing might be something to investigate for future versions :)

Use lead-free solder if the water is used for consumption. Galvanize all metal contacts with non-oxidizing material like nickel or gold to prevent corrosion/rust.

Nice work John. I've had an old header tank with ballcock valve kicking about for just such a purpose for nearly a year. I was going to hook it up to the translucent chook-waterer but will re-think this now in light of the algae issue which I hadn't thought about (We've only just got our chooks up and running for about 3 weeks now)
